To facilitate the
needs of Family care-givers, a formal Family alliance was
formed in 1998. The parents/guardians of the members of
Ashadeep's Daycare
and Rehabilitation Centre formed the core group of this
Family alliance, which also comprised other families. These
families were mostly from the lower middle-class strata
of society. Monthly meetings were held where local psychiatrists
were invited to talk of relevant issues. Ashadeep's alliance
of family care-givers of persons with mental illness has
been benefiting the members by sharing of knowledge and
problems, mutual help during crisis as well as helping economically
weaker members in procuring medicines and generally creating
awareness in the community.
A Day Care and Recreational Center
for the elderly, Prashantiloy
came about as a result of the needs felt by a few of the
elderly family care-givers of this alliance. The initial
Outreach
programmes of Ashadeep were facilitated by some family
members of the alliance who came from certain outlying areas
or suburbs of Guwahati.
